Monday Morning in Guatemala

Monday morning in Guatemala… I’m sitting “in” our outdoor living room/office, enjoying the relative quiet of the morning. The roosters are being quiet and the Blue Bird buses are just a distant rumble from this side of our apartment. The sky is blue with a handful of puffy clouds. The sun is shining brightly as usual.

In the middle of the night when I got up to pee, I heard and smelled rain. We’ve had no more than about a dozen drops since we arrived. It was a tiny taste of what is to come. May is when the rainy season begins here. I didn’t think I’d say this, but I’m finding myself looking forward to it. This season, as beautiful as it is, is very, very dry and dusty!

Much of our time this past week or so, has been spent typing away at our computers. We’re busily working on the Prospectus which clearly defines all our goals and objectives for establishing the Village here. It describes in detail, the land we’ve got our eye on and all the possibilities that it provides. It’s an exciting time but I can’t help but start to feel a little impatient with it all. This is what happens to me when I spend too much time at my computer!

Somedays I wish that we were already set up in the Village and just hanging out with the kids. Okay… I wish that many days! For me, it’s about the children. I love kids so much. I love the sweet light they bring to a room. I love their silly antics and their contagious giggles. I love their questions and their amazing insights. I love how readily they love and hug. I love learning with them and learning from them. I notice that I am happiest when in the presence of kids. This probably comes as no surprise to those that know me!

We’re starting to look forward to Sunday when our friend, Ellen Coburn arrives from Vancouver. Ellen started a school near Huehuetenango in Guatemala a number of years back. The school is for indigenous kids and is offered in their local language of “mam”. Ellen will be in Guatemala for two weeks. We’ll be going to visit her work near “Huehue” and then coming back to Antigua to join in on the extensive “Semana Santa” (Easter) celebrations together!

Here’s wishing all of you a great week wherever you are!
