Project Somos is based on the land where the Maya Kachiquel people lived for a thousand years. It is a magnificent fertile landscape that can easily support human settlements because of its climate, soil and abundant water sources. We are fortunate to be located here, as we are depending on the supportive environment to assist us in our goal of sustainability.
Unfortunately for the local Maya population, because of social, political and economic reasons, they have not been able to maximize their favorable natural circumstances and have only been able to survive, not thrive. With all of the natural assets at their disposal, it would only be logical, with beneficent guidance that they would thrive. Sadly, this is not the case. 60% of indigenous children under 5 years old are malnourished. The rural indigenous strive to just survive and provide for their family. It is heartbreaking to see on a daily basis, when there could have been a viable and more positive alternative.
Project Somos is working to develop and expand its sphere of influence of sustainability into the local community of Chivarabal. By offering a land share with our workers, volunteering and supporting the local school, providing a living wage and benefits to our employees, (as well as training), we are laying the groundwork for a positive shift to take place. We also have plans to establish a “neighborhood house” that will offer the local community a variety of capacity building classes, including nutrition and organic gardening, and provide access to the internet (which does not currently exist).
It is the intent of Project Somos, by offering opportunities to the local community, for which they had not previous access that they will move from a precarious survival mode to the stability of thriving. It will take time, effort and resources, but it is an investment that will give many human social returns. It is cultivating a bright future for Chivarabal and Guatemala, the home of Project Somos.
Here’s to thriving,
