On Tuesday we had our first community library time here at the Project Somos Children’s Village. Since we began collecting children’s Spanish picture books, we have gathered over 100 books that will one day fill a library building!
Meanwhile, the books will be shared with the local kids who don’t have a library in the community of Chivarabal. I was excited to be the only dog invited to attend the first library time. Because the kids are scared of dogs (except me), the other three were locked up when the children arrived.
But not me. No, I was there to greet the kids and to read with them. When they see me they call out “Tika, Tika, Tika!”. I roll on to my back and let them rub my belly. I listen when they read their books. I pose in front of groups photos with them.
We started with letting the kids read whatever books they wanted to. We then did story time. Which of course included a story about a dog. The kids used dog puppets to read out loud and they loved that! This will be a regular feature of our library time. Dog books.
When the boys were looking for a story to read, they requested scary books. The girls wanted princess books. No one wanted to leave at the end of the two hour session. They wanted to go play in the playground or to play futbol. Thursdays will be play time from now on. When it isn’t pouring. Which it did this past Thursday!
I can’t wait for the next kids’ and for when we have kids on site!
