Local Guatamalan Community

Tecpán, Guatemala

Project Somos Children’s Village is located near the town of Tecpán, Guatemala. Tecpán’s population is over 90% indigenous, mostly descendants of the K’aqchikel Maya.

The local Tecpán community is very important to the Project Somos Children’s Village and will play an integral part in the children’s community engagement and longterm sustainability.

Mutual support between the Village and the local community is encouraged whenever and wherever possible.

The social and cultural harmony will be promoted by offering educational programs and health services to the community at large.

The local customs and religions are respected and there is no attempt at any conversion to any religious belief or creed. The Village has no specific political or religious affiliations.

Members of the local Tecpán community or the closest community village are employed whenever and wherever possible.

Children from the community of Chivarabal are encouraged and welcome to participate in activities within the Children’s Village.

Development of the local school will be assisted where possible. The public curriculum will be augmented by various intellectual and artistic subjects in classrooms and workshops at the Village.

Over 7000 students in Tecpán and Chivarabal are assisting with the construction of the Children’s Village by making eco-bricks.
