A Double Milestone in Literacy, and a Double Opportunity to Give
At Project Somos, we believe education is about more than just reading and writing. It’s about preparing children for a future where adaptability, multilingualism, and digital literacy will be essential. That’s why one of our long-term goals is for our students to graduate trilingual—in Spanish, English, and Technology.
This year, we reached a new and heartwarming milestone that captures exactly what this vision looks like in action.
A First for Our Children—and for Us
Just a few months ago, many of our five-year-olds had never written a word. Some had never even touched a computer. Holding a pencil felt unfamiliar. A keyboard was a mystery. They were nervous, cautious, afraid of getting it wrong.
But side by side, with encouragement and patience from their teachers, everything began to change.
With Seño Rafa, they learned to hold a pencil and form letters. With Miss Phomolo, they practiced speaking English with joy and curiosity. And with Profe Ricardo, they took their first steps into the digital world—learning to turn on a computer, move a mouse, and find each letter on the keyboard.
Then, something beautiful happened.
For the very first time, our young students wrote their names by hand—and then typed their names on a keyboard.
Not weeks or months apart. At the same time.
It’s the first time in our program’s history that children have achieved these two key literacy milestones simultaneously. And it represents far more than learning letters. It’s about confidence, courage, and the merging of traditional literacy with digital fluency.
Imagine Five Years from Now
In five years, these students will be completing primary school. By the time they graduate high school, they’ll not only be confident readers and writers in two languages, but also competent digital citizens—ready to participate in a world that demands these skills.
This is the vision. And with your help, it’s becoming reality.
