In rural Guatemala, it’s still common for girls to be seen as an expense, not an investment. Many are expected to care for siblings, clean, cook, and work from a young age. Education is rarely a priority, and early marriage is often seen as the only way out.
Valentina and Melany are two girls who followed nearly identical paths, until one moment changed everything.
Both girls joined Project Somos as children. They learned to read, create, and grow in a safe, nurturing environment. As teens, they joined our Girls’ Club, where they found friendship and self-belief. In 2024, both enrolled in our cook training program, gaining hands-on skills in the kitchen and a renewed sense of purpose.
In 2025, we invited them to join our new pilot middle school program. Both said yes immediately, hopeful, ready, determined.
But when they asked their parents for permission, Melany’s parents said yes. Valentina’s said no.
Valentina, now 20, is responsible for raising her two young nephews after her sister’s passing. She weaves to support her family and carries a burden she never chose. Her dreams have dimmed. Marriage, though another form of restriction, is now the only “approved” escape.
Melany, 16, also left school early due to bullying. But when the chance came again, her parents supported her. She’s now studying Spanish, English, math, and even Quiché. She dreams of becoming the best nurse in Guatemala, and we believe in her.
“At Project Somos, the staff are with you all the way. They never turn their back on you.”
– Melany, 2025 student
These two stories highlight why we don’t just educate girls, we work with whole families and communities. When parents believe in education, everything shifts. When donors like you stand beside us, even more becomes possible.
Until 31st July, all donations to our Summer Match Campaign will be DOUBLED up to $25,000.
That means your support goes twice as far to help more girls say “yes” to school, and yes to their future.
