We have been fortunate to have hosted some wonderful musicians that have brought a group of their fans to be volunteers. The Culture Dome was an initiative by a musical volunteer group to have a place for art, music and culture at Project Somos. The group raised the funds for the building assisted in the construction. It was a wonderful experience for everyone and stands as a testament to what a small group of like-minded people can achieve.
The accommodations are simple, yet very comfortable. Being a sustainable project, all the buildings are super adobe or eco-brick and we have solar electric and solar hot water. Much of the food we serve to volunteers is harvested from the onsite organic farm. Our cook has mastered deliciousness using the local ingredients.
Project Somos has a view of 8 volcanoes in the distance and is located in a pine forest at 7000 feet (2300M). This area is known as the “land of eternal spring”, the temperatures are cool at night and warm in the daytime.
Guatemala has some spectacular natural beauty and Antigua is a UNESCO world heritage site. The groups usually take a touristic trip to Lake Atitlan or Antigua for a few days before or after visiting us. We have a logistics person here that makes in-country travel arrangements. While onsite at Project Somos we accompany the students to a local Mayan ruin - Iximche, that is 20 minutes away. It has a very interesting history and gives context to where Somos is located and where Guatemala has emerged from.
A criminal record check is required for anyone over the age of 18 years of age wanting to volunteer at the Project.
A $100 USD insurance fee is required for everybody.
Canadians and USA citizens do not require a special visa prior to entering Guatemala. Other countries should check travel requirements prior to travel. You should also check if there are any current COVID-19 travel restrictions.
