Our financial needs are broken down into three pillars of support: Learn, Grow, Sustain. We invite you to explore each of these essential pillars.
Learn |
Preschool We provide preschool classes for children aged 3-5. Each class has a maximum of fifteen children and is taught by a professionally trained Early Childhood Educator. They are taught in their native language of Kaqchikel and Spanish. English is also taught by visiting volunteers. We provide preschool classes for children aged 3-5. Children come to the Project after their regular school day and are served a hot nutritious lunch when they arrive. Following their meal, they have time to play in one of our beautiful playgrounds or soccer field. They then gather with their teacher to focus on literacy, numeracy and homework. Computer, English and chess classes are also offered. A healthy snack is provided before they leave at 4pm. |
Grow |
Nutrition One of the biggest challenges of the Mayan people is malnutrition. This is particularly damaging to young children and their developing brains. 50% of the rural Mayan population is malnourished and have no information or education on nutrition. We provide healthy food to all of the kids, in attendance. Most students only subsist at home on tortillas, salt and beans, which does not meet minimum requirements for a child’s healthy growth. Our programming provides all students with a good nutritional base. The students have classes in gardening, cooking and nutrition to promote and establish good habits of eating and expanding their exposure and appreciation of a diverse menu. |
Sustain |
Give Where Most Needed~General Funds Undesignated funds address a broad range of needs. The flexibility of general funds allows Project Somos to direct them to where they are most needed, at the times when they are most needed. |
