Today at Project Somos we are happily looking ahead to receive children from the local community on January 18th. We have received word from the government that school will be permitted to reopen with COVID-19 restrictions, ie, masks, social distancing, limited numbers and outdoor classrooms and lunchrooms. We are preparing our outdoor patio spaces to accommodate three different classroom areas. From this initial start-up date we will ramp up the number of students until we are fully operational between February 1st and Febraury 8th.
It has been almost 10 months since Somos students were last onsite and we initiated the Food Bank. At its peak, we were providing weekly food for 900 people. Since public transportation has resumed, and the corn, bean and other harvests are in process, we have suspended the Food Bank. Local people will be able to reapply for assistance this week and there will be a work exchange connected with it. Somos will provide food that is grown onsite – quinoa, beans, kale, lettuce and other garden vegetables.
We look ahead to the next months with excitement. The children have sorely missed coming to Somos and all the staff has missed the kids. We appreciate your past assistance and look forward to your ongoing support moving forward. Your help is what allows us to move forward and to pivot to meet the challenges we face here.
We will keep you posted with stories and photos as they develop.
