He aspires to continuously grow while empowering others to embrace leadership roles within society. Ricardo was also one of the children in school asked to create an ecobrick to help Project Somos, leaving his footprint here from a young age.

Rosario Morales Calel, Teacher
“I love Project Somos because it is child-centered, allowing kids to explore through play”.
Rosario, a native of Tecpan, comes from a mixed cultural background, with her father from Chichicastenango and her mother from Tecpan. Despite her parents’ proficiency in Mayan languages, she never learned them due to past discrimination. Graduating as a primary school teacher, Rosario pours her passion into her work. Alongside her roles as a devoted wife and mother of three, she is also a Clinical Psychologist. Outside of work, Rosario devotes herself to her family and pursues further training in middle school education, with a focus on language and communication.
Joining Project Somos in 2017, Rosario found her calling. The project’s unconventional approach to education, prioritizing emotional expression and non-traditional learning, resonated deeply with her values. Project Somos cherishes Rosario for her boundless maternal love and her unwavering dedication to every child in the community.
Lirio Elizabeth Chocoj Tún, Preschool Teacher
“Joining Project Somos was a natural choice for me and I value the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere we foster for the children.”
Lirio, born and raised in Tecpan, is a dedicated educator with a passion for nurturing young minds. Graduating as a preschool teacher and qualified social worker, she chose this path to fulfill her love for working with children. Her joy comes from witnessing their growth in a safe, supportive environment.
In her spare time, Lirio is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Community Management for Local Human Development and certification in teaching middle school. When not studying, she enjoys running, spending time with family and friends, and recharging. What inspires Lirio most is seeing children progress, learn new skills, and grow in confidence and happiness. Her creativity shines through in her teaching, with students crafting beautiful creations under her guidance.

A proud Tecpaneca, born and raised in a family of weavers and graduating as a primary school teacher, Rafa now fulfills roles as both a preschool and primary school educator at Project Somos.
Choosing to work for Project Somos was a natural fit for her due to its innovative educational methodology, which emphasizes learning through play, creativity, and love. In her spare time, she is dedicated to her ongoing studies, currently pursuing a degree in communication and language. When not immersed in academics, she relishes moments spent with her family. Norma España, School Cook

Norma, a devoted mother of four daughters, hails from San Juan Poaquil, Tecpan. With a background in cooking and cleaning, she relocated to Chivarabel in 2011, where she first engaged with Project Somos as a parent, witnessing her daughters flourish within its nurturing environment.
In August 2022, Norma seized an opportunity to join a cook training program at Project Somos, completing it in six weeks. Subsequently, she transitioned to an assistant cook role, eventually assuming full management of the kitchen in May 2023. Norma ensures that students receive a nutritious meal and two snacks daily, significantly contributing to their well-being.
Norma’s remarkable ability to efficiently manage the kitchen while maintaining impeccable cleanliness earns her admiration from the Project Somos team. Her dedication and skill in providing nourishment to dozens daily are truly exceptional, making her an invaluable asset to the community.

Elizabeth is a mother of two from Tecpan and is a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and mental health. With a background in psychology and a deep commitment to helping others, Elizabeth has dedicated her career to making a positive impact on young lives. As a seasoned professional in the field of mental health, Elizabeth has worked extensively with various organizations where she has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of therapy and guidance in shaping the futures of children and adolescents.
In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys immersing herself in nature, and finding solace and inspiration through outdoor activities and sports. She also has a keen interest in research, particularly in exploring scientific articles that further her understanding of human behavior and well-being. Above all, Elizabeth finds fulfillment in spending quality time with her family, cherishing the moments shared with her two children who serve as her constant motivation and source of inspiration. Project Somos admires Elizabeth’s professional training and experience in her field.
Oscar Zeta, Farm Manager and Project Caretaker

Originally from Tecpan, Oscar embarked on a 17-year journey working in farm and agriculture in Escuintla, where he honed his skills in farm management while also starting a family. In 2007, along with his wife and son Emmanuel, they decided to return to Tecpan, where he worked as a farm administrator for a local NGO. In 2023, Oscar happily joined Project Somos, now residing onsite as the land and farm manager, ensuring the property’s security.
Choosing to work for Project Somos was an easy decision due to my love for farm life and the opportunity to learn organic farming. What he cherishes most about Project Somos is the opportunity to live and work surrounded by nature, witnessing breathtaking sunrises over the mountains.
Project Somos admires Oscar for his warm hospitality towards visiting volunteers, often sharing meals and culinary skills with them. His initiative in enriching their experience exemplifies his dedication and kindness.
Daniel Raxjal, Farm Worker
“I was drawn to the Project’s mission and the inviting atmosphere surrounding it.”
Daniel Raxjal Ajtzalan is a resilient individual who has faced the hardships of losing both his wife and daughter in the span of three years. Despite these profound losses, Daniel remains steadfast in his commitment to providing for his family and finding fulfillment in his work. His diverse professional background includes roles in farm labor, tree cutting, restaurant security, and masonry.
Grateful for the opportunity to work at Project Somos, Daniel finds satisfaction in the meaningful work being done, particularly around child development. Daniel spends his spare time working on the council of his local community as well as officiating football games. He draws inspiration from the love and resilience displayed by his children, who continue to persevere despite the immense loss they have experienced.
Santos Cojtí, Farm Worker

Santos Cojtí Catu, a 41-year-old resident of Tecpán, is deeply rooted in his dedication to farming and cultivation. With two children aged 16 and 18, he finds solace and purpose in providing for his family through his work. Alongside his agricultural pursuits, Santos has also delved into the realm of masonry, showcasing his versatility and willingness to explore different trades.
Choosing to work for Project Somos was a decision born out of both necessity and attraction but Santos found himself drawn to the work, appreciating its stability and the welcoming environment fostered by the organization. Inspired by the unwavering support of his family and driven by a desire to achieve his aspirations, Santos finds motivation in every aspect of his life. Among his personal heroes stands his mother, whose enduring care and concern continue to serve as a beacon of strength and guidance in his journey through adulthood.
Claudia Ordoñez, Accountant and Volunteer Group Support

Claudia’s journey began in Sololá, later moving to Amatitlán before settling in Tecpan in 2005 with her husband and two daughters. Armed with a teaching degree and a background in Public Accounting and Auditing, Claudia oversees Project Somos’s finances across Canada and Guatemala, also lending support to logistical operations during volunteer group visits.
Drawn to Project Somos’s environmental focus, Claudia found purpose in contributing to meaningful work. Project Somos admires Claudia’s meticulous attention to detail in financial management and her adept coordination of volunteer groups, making her an invaluable asset to the organization.
Marelyne Ramirez, Director of Educational Programs

Originally from Guatemala City, Marelyne made Tecpan her home in 2011 after meeting her husband, and she’s never looked back. As a proud mother of two, she holds certifications as a preschool teacher and a psychopedagogue specialist for children with learning disabilities. Choosing to work for Project Somos was an easy decision for Marelyne as our mission of prioritizing children’s well-being and breaking cycles of poverty through education and love deeply resonates with her.

Hailing from the UK with a degree in International Business Studies and French, she trained in charity fundraising management before coming to Guatemala in 2006 to volunteer at a rural school in Chimaltenango. This experience ignited her passion for empowering children through education and nourishment. Since then, driven by her commitment to providing quality education and fostering environments where children can thrive, she’s held diverse leadership roles across Latin America.
