Hi, my name is Rafaela, I am a school teacher and I have been working for Project Somos for five years. What touches me the most is to see how the children here at Somos are able to express their emotions, both positive and negative.
It touches me very much to see them laugh and enjoy while they play. They can also express when they feel sad because they trust in us as their teachers. Yesterday something very beautiful happened to me. There is one little boy, six years old, his father is an alcoholic. The boy shared with us that his dad, when he is drunk, always promises that he will buy a bike for him. But his dad never remembers the promise and he still does not have a bike at home. He told me he loves to come to the Project and he has learned to ride one of the bikes that we have here!
Also, since we started having children at the Project again, I see that the children felt happy to be back because they really missed this place. And, they find in us a great support to help them to do their homework. One of the girls who comes to the Project told me: “Miss, you do know how to explain?” and the key is that we give them the attention and the time they need.
As I write this, I cry because I am happy to spend time with them because at home nobody else does. And it touches me. I am not sure if it is sadness or happiness, but it is good to be here to help them.
Hugs are not allowed because of the pandemic and sometimes they really need it. It is hard not to hug them.
I am very happy to be here, and I am thankful to everybody, especially Heather and Greg, and all the donors who make it all possible.
